name; Amelia Winters alignment; neutral age; 19 birthdate; tba zodiac; tba occupation; maid languages; English, Japanese religion; a weird mix of Christianity and Shintoism family; father, mother, twin sister (Andrea, 19, |
Amelia was born and raised in London, the older of a pair of twin daughters born to an English father and a Japanese mother. Their father was an architect working in Tokyo, who fell in love with and married a maid there; a few years after the marriage, he was no longer able to find work, so he returned to his native country with his new wife in tow, and not long after that, the children were born. From the time they were children, Amelia clearly favored her mother, while her sister Andrea was more of a daddy's girl. Amelia wanted to learn her mother's language, she wanted green tea and not English tea, she wanted to try on the kimono hanging in the back of her mother's closet. She wanted to go by her middle name, Nozomi, rather than her first. Her mother taught her all of it, and Amelia cheerfully volunteered to help with the cleaning and help with every chore she was allowed to handle, because such moments were usually taken as opportunities for her mother to tell her more. She got through school with average grades, but the family couldn't afford to send her to college - a fact that didn't really bother her, since she hadn't been interested in most of what she learned anyway. For Amelia, the real attraction to school was the chance to hone the strange powers she'd begun to develop. With her power to control sound came a taste for intrigue, and she used her powers to cancel out any sounds she was making that might've caused people to remember she was in the back of the room listening to them, or she'd make her classmates' whispers just a bit louder. Amelia soon had enough information to rule the school's rumor mill - if she actually chose to say anything, which she rarely did. With college out of the question, however, she needed to find a job - and so she took the first thing that came to mind and began work as a maid for the von Stefan family, along with Andrea, and has remained there for the past few years. She dusts, she cleans, she does windows - and she spends the whole time just happening to "overhear" all the family gossip, the juicy tidbits, and the pointless conversations. Her employers love her. "She's so quiet," they say. "You'd hardly know she was working there!" And indeed, they usually don't. |
Amelia took most of what her mother taught her to heart - to be polite, deferential, and to be seen and not heard. However, as she was still raised in the western world, she has a sense of when to turn it on and turn it off, so to speak, and she can be quite chatty under the right circumstances; on the job, however, she's all business... ...except she's not. She never grew out of her teenage habit of listening in on others' conversations, using her powers to eavesdrop on everything that's going on, and the like; as such, she spends as much attention on listening to her employers as she does on the cleaning itself, using her powers to dampen the sounds she makes to prevent them from realizing she was ever there to listen. She hoards the information compulsively, although she doesn't do much else with it. She never writes anything down and she hardly ever reveals anything to those not already in the know, because a secret is only fun if it remains a secret, and she isn't quite convinced of others' worthiness to share in her bounty of information anyway. She still revels in the Asian side of her heritage, and although she's outgrown her childhood habit of going by her middle name, she still prefers to wear a kimono under her apron rather than a more standard dress, much to the chagrin of her more conservative sister. |
Manipulation of sound - muffling it, amplifying it, or negating it completely. She can also create simple sounds at will, but of course simulating the sound of an explosion takes a bit more focus and energy than simulating the sound of a pencil falling on the floor. |
